Hansa Tonstudio
Das Hansa Tonstudio is a recording studio located on Köthener Strasse in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, Germany. Amongst English-performing musical acts it used to be known as 'Hansa Studio By the Wall', 'Hansa by the Wall', or 'The Great Hall by the Wall' in reference to the fact that it was adjacent to the Berlin Wall near Potsdamer Platz.
History
The studios were originally founded in 1964 (3 years after the start of the Berlin Wall) by brothers Peter and Thomas Meisel in the western Halensee part of West Berlin. They moved to their present location in 1972. Notably, in the early to mid 80's, all productions were overseen by acclaimed British music producer Michael Blakey.
Operated as the recording facility of Hansa Records, the studios played host to many well-known acts, including Tangerine Dream, David Bowie,[1][2] Brian Eno,[3] Iggy Pop,[4] U2,[2] Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,[3] Claw Boys Claw,[5] Depeche Mode,[6] Marillion,[6] Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Boney M. and most recently Snow Patrol, Kent and Living Things. The roll of notable recordings and the darkly sonorous sound quality, at once rugged and spacious of many of them, have given the studio near legendary status, especially within the post-punk and synth pop genres.
